Those who insist that all intersex people have a “real” sex of female or male covered up by intersex and that intersex can be stripped, sanded and ground away to reveal a buried binary then you are selling a product using shame and fear. Those who argue that intersex children should be subjected to genital mutilation, elaborate drugs to cover up their hormones instead of approaching hormone balances from a HEALTH point of view…. if you insist that all CAH XX people MUST become women and all XXY people MUST become men and all of them MUST be heterosexual then you don’t care about intersex people. You care about conformity and you pretend to be enforcing an authority over their bodies and lives that you have no business asserting. Shaming children is abuse. There are so many intersex men who were/are/will be born with ambiguous genitals and we are actively being covered up, silenced, ignored sometimes by other intersex people who mistakenly think that if they claim that all CAH XX people are just women with some “female trouble” that some random authority will stop questioning their right to be women. It actually works the other was around. Those who call them “imposter women” are those selling them things they never needed – they’re already women/girls. Just like we’re already men/boys. We are who and what we say we are because just like males and females we have gender identities that only we understand. Just like males or females we can have diseases, physical failures that need help and medical attention. Just like males or females the answer to our troubles shouldn’t always be to “cut it out, or cut it off”. A double mastectomy is NOT the only answer to a breast tumor, hysterectomy needn’t be the ONLY response to heavy menstruation, and a subtotal prostatectomy needn’t be the ONLY response to prostatic hypertrophy. We went through periods of just that kind of extremism and the wholesale genital mutilation of intersex children is part and parcel of those crazy decades between 1975-2000. Medicine woke up about the others. It’s damned time to put the hatchets down for external genitals as well. Wanton surgery is not good medicine and shame is not good religion.
