Poem: My Mother’s Magic Wand

I wish my mother

had that magic wand she always wanted

The one she talked about

so that she could take all my pain away

When she died, she would have given it to me

so I could now take all your pain away today

When my husband died, I was shattered in half

the worst pain I have ever somehow survived

When you came into my life

Without your wanting it to,

it made my life worth living again

It was not your plan

It was not your pain

It simply happened

Love bloomed

You warned even

that you could not have more responsibility

For over two years now

You are the sun

And I am the moon

You are my beautiful black rose

with thorns

And I am the watering can

that keeps you blooming

And coming back for more

You are here, you say

I am here each day for you, too

We are now both so disabled and broken

Two circus sideshow freaks

but without a ringmaster

We are free

and yet seven thousand miles away

held prisoners in a different way

Will I ever hold you?

My beautiful black Rose

I hope

God help us

both

e tornare a sbocciare ancora

Ora siamo entrambi così fragili e spezzati

due fenomeni da baraccone

ma senza un domatore

Siamo liberi

eppure, a settemila miglia di distanza

prigionieri in modo diverso

Ti stringerò mai tra le braccia?

Mia splendida rosa nera

Lo spero

Che Dio ci aiuti

entrambi
