In a land, far far away
lives a black beautiful Rose
This castle grows the most beautiful flowers
Growing against the highest brick wall that I have ever seen
So high to keep out all those who will do harm out
You see, the battles have come and go, so many times before
Deep scars have been left from years of torment and pain
The thorns have grown to protect his heart
To keep her most sacred
beautiful black bloom safe
A secret that few can see
Few get to come this close
To protect this most precious and innocent heart
I have built a bridge
Many sunrises and sunsets
Many full moons
even when this distance tries to divide us
The same stars shared shining down upon us
One heavy rock at a time
across this deep chasm
Tomorrow day after day
I am here
What a relief when my own heart has been crushed
by all this hate and prejudice
I have touch this heart with deep care and respect
with patience
With pure love I have watered this beautiful Rose
and witness this bloom open and grow
I am here
But those sharp thorns will remain
each sharp thorn is necessary for life to continue in such a cruel world as this
I have seen our love grow out of nothing but mutual fear
So much blood shed from the battles that waged war in our ugly past
And yet through the pain of it all
we have both survived
we are witness to a miracle
I am here
This friendship is divine
because of the two who died
who sent you to me
God protects
this most precious black
Rose

I see you, my beloved friend, on your Birthday!
Dedicated to Carlo Ottavi.

Dedicated to Sting – Fortress Around Your Heart from Dream of the Blue Turtle 1985
Under the ruins of a walled city
Crumbling towers and beams of yellow lights
No flags of truce, no cries of pity
The siege guns have been pounding through the nights
It took a day to build the city
We walked through its streets in the afternoon
As I returned across the field’s I’d known
I recognized the walls that I’d once laid
Had to stop in my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I’d laid
And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire
Then I went off to fight some battle
That I’d invented inside my head
Away so long for years and years
You probably thought or even wished that I was dead
While the armies are all sleeping
Beneath the tattered flag we’d made
I had to stop my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I’d laid
And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire
This prison has now become your home
A sentence you seem prepared to pay
It took a day to build the city
We walked through its streets in the afternoon
As I returned across the lands I’d known
I recognized the fields where I’d once played
Had to stop in my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I’d laid
And if I built this fortress around your heart
Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire
Then let me build a bridge
For I cannot fill the chasm
And let me set the battlements on fire
