So why are some women able to grow beards?

There are a few reasons to why a woman could grow a beard.  Although it is rare, there are a small number of women who are able to grow enough facial hair to have a true beard.  Here are some reason to why a woman would grow a beard:

  1. Hormonal Differences caused by intersex traits, or intersex conditions.  Such as Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Some are saying that PCOS is a form of intersex trait.  Intersex traits could be as common as 1 in 150 people.
  2. Rare Genetic Disorders, such as Hypertrichosis
  3. Taking Anabolic Steroids, or Testosterone
