● Students will examine how ethnicity, culture, religion, spirituality, socioeconomic status, and family values shape the experiences and treatment of intersex individuals. They will explore how these factors influence sexual values and behaviors, and how they contribute to the socio-cultural pressures faced by intersex people.
● Students will critically evaluate the medical, political, and legal practices surrounding the treatment of intersex children, including the ethical implications of non-consensual surgeries and hormone treatments. They will explore how these practices intersect with human rights issues, as highlighted by international human rights organizations.
● Students will explore how faith and religious beliefs impact intersex individuals, both in terms of the support and challenges they face. They will analyze how religious communities can perpetuate secrecy and coercion, as well as how faith can serve as a source of healing, courage, and hope for intersex individuals.
● Students will develop strategies for providing culturally competent and empathetic support to intersex individuals, taking into account the complex interplay of medical, socio-cultural, and religious factors. They will learn how to advocate for human rights and offer effective support that respects the dignity and autonomy of intersex individuals.
