So why are some women able to grow beards?

There are a few reasons to why a woman could grow a beard.  Although it is rare, there are a small number of women who are able to grow enough facial hair to have a true beard.  Here are some reason to why a woman would grow a beard:

  1. Hormonal Differences caused by intersex traits, or intersex conditions.  This is called by doctors “hormonal intersexuality”.  Such as Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Some are saying that PCOS is a form of intersex traits.  Intersex traits could be as common as 1 in 150 people.
  2. Some women who have Partial Androgen Insensitivity (PIAS) can have facial hair too, and their chromosomal make-up would be XY, but they naturally appear women to the world.
  3. Rare Genetic Disorders, such as Hypertrichosis.
  4. Taking Anabolic Steroids, or Testosterone.  This could happen with weight trainers, or with transgender men.
  5. Although not talked about in this blog transgender women who have not had hair removal.
